Understanding The Scope
The Dark Canvas
Our client had a common styling dilemma: their living space felt dark, heavy, and dated, and they simply didn't know where to start to refresh it. The room contained two mid-century retro armchairs with high-quality dark-wood frames, but they were upholstered in a worn, dark-green plaid tartan fabric that absorbed light rather than reflecting it.
Additionally, the window setup—consisting of heavy bronze metallic curtains and dark, closed venetian blinds—completely cut the room off from the garden, turning the space into a closed-off, gloomy corner.
Engineering The Solution
Bringing the Outdoors In
To uplift the room, we wanted to leverage the room's best asset: the lush green garden outside. The first step was to remove the heavy bronze curtains entirely, opening up the room. We raised the venetian blinds, allowing natural sunlight to flood the space and turning the outdoor garden view into a natural, scenic backdrop for the seating area.
Reupholstery & Curated Accents
We restored the client's mid-century frames by reupholstering the seats in a textured linen weave in a soft off-white/beige tone. This choice grounded the chairs in modern elegance, bouncing light around the corner while emphasizing the rich grain of the dark wood frames.
To pull the scene together, we replaced the small rug with a larger, light-textured neutral rug and styled the chairs with sage-green fringe accent pillows to connect the seating to the outdoor greenery. A potted snake plant sits on the side cabinet, introducing height and a touch of organic texture.
"We absolutely loved how fresh, open, and light the room feels now. It brings in so much more natural light, and the colors and textures match the space perfectly."
